Hadith #5004

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما أكْمَلَ السِّيادَةَ مَنْ لَمْ يَسْمَحْ۔

This can be translated as,

He who does not grant generously has not perfected [his] eminence.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (siyadah) "سِيَادَةَ" refers to leadership or authority. It encompasses the qualities of power, control, and influence. The term (samah) "سَمَحْ" means to be generous, liberal, and magnanimous. It implies giving freely and abundantly without any reluctance or hesitation.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of generosity and giving in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), Allah says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the concept of generosity and its rewards. Just as a single seed yields a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously multiplies one's blessings and rewards. It is through generosity that one's eminence and leadership are perfected.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's assistance and sustenance in all our endeavors, including acts of generosity. It is through the grace and blessings bestowed by Allah that one can truly excel in leadership and attain eminence.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the significance of generosity in leadership. He teaches us that true leadership is not merely about holding authority or power, but it is about utilizing that authority to benefit others. A leader who fails to be generous and compassionate towards those under their care cannot claim to have perfected their eminence.

When a leader is generous, they inspire loyalty and trust among their followers. They create an environment of harmony and cooperation, where everyone feels valued and supported. This fosters a sense of unity and strengthens the bonds within the community.

Conversely, a leader who withholds generosity and fails to grant the needs and rights of others creates a divisive and oppressive atmosphere. Such a leader may be feared or obeyed out of compulsion, but they will never earn the sincere respect and admiration of their followers.

The consequences of not granting generously can be seen throughout history. Leaders who were known for their stinginess and lack of compassion often faced rebellion and unrest within their realms. On the other hand, leaders who were known for their generosity and benevolence, like the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), were revered and loved by their followers.

As Muslims, we should reflect upon this Hadith and strive to embody the qualities of generosity and compassion in our own lives. Whether we hold positions of authority or not, we can all contribute to the betterment of society by being generous with our time, resources, and kindness. By doing so, we not only perfect our own eminence but also contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be generous and compassionate leaders, following in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble family. May He bless us with the wisdom to understand the true essence of leadership and guide us towards actions that benefit humanity as a whole.
