ظِلُّ اللِّئامِ نَكِدٌ وَبِيٌّ۔
The shadow [and patronage] of the vile ones is [an] endemic adversity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Vile)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ظِلُّ اللِّئامِ نَكِدٌ وَبِيٌّ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
The shadow [and patronage] of the vile ones is [an] endemic adversity.
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (shadow) "ظِلُّ" refers to the influence or protection that someone provides. It symbolizes the support and shelter that individuals seek from others. (the vile ones) "اللِّئامِ" refers to those who are wicked, immoral, and devoid of noble qualities. They are individuals who engage in harmful actions and spread negativity. (endemic adversity) "نَكِدٌ" signifies the constant troubles, hardships, and afflictions that arise from associating with the vile ones. It represents the negative consequences that result from aligning oneself with those who lack integrity.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2,
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing our companions wisely and avoiding the company of those who engage in sinful behavior. Associating with the vile ones can lead to adverse consequences, as their influence can corrupt our character and lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 28, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.
This verse reminds us that the material possessions and worldly relationships we have are merely tests from Allah. If we allow ourselves to be influenced by the vile ones for the sake of worldly gains, we risk losing the true reward that lies with Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the company they keep. The vile ones, due to their immoral and wicked nature, bring nothing but adversity and hardship. Associating with them can lead to a multitude of negative consequences, both in this world and in the Hereafter.
The consequences of aligning oneself with the vile ones can manifest in various ways. It can lead to a deterioration of one's moral character, as the negative influence of such individuals can corrupt one's values and principles. Additionally, it can result in a loss of peace and tranquility, as the constant presence of adversity and troubles becomes a part of one's life. Moreover, it can hinder one's spiritual growth and distance them from the path of righteousness.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to surround ourselves with individuals who possess noble qualities and uphold the teachings of Islam. By seeking the company of the righteous, we can benefit from their knowledge, wisdom, and positive influence. Their shadow and patronage will bring blessings, guidance, and protection in our lives.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the company they keep. Associating with the vile ones brings nothing but adversity and hardship. By aligning ourselves with the righteous and distancing ourselves from the wicked, we can safeguard our faith, character, and well-being. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our companions wisely and protect us from the negative influence of the vile ones.
