Hadith #9377

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ظِلُّ اللِّئامِ نَكِدٌ وَبِيٌّ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

The shadow [and patronage] of the vile ones is [an] endemic adversity.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (shadow) "ظِلُّ" refers to the influence or protection that someone provides. It symbolizes the support and shelter that individuals seek from others. (the vile ones) "اللِّئامِ" refers to those who are wicked, immoral, and devoid of noble qualities. They are individuals who engage in harmful actions and spread negativity. (endemic adversity) "نَكِدٌ" signifies the constant troubles, hardships, and afflictions that arise from associating with the vile ones. To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2,

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.

And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.
