بِالتَّكَبُّرِ يَكُونُ المَقْتُ۔
Due to arrogance there is loathing.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Arrogance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالتَّكَبُّرِ يَكُونُ المَقْتُ۔" This can be translated as,
Due to arrogance there is loathing.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "Takabbur" refers to arrogance or pride, which is the feeling of superiority and self-importance. "Maqt" means loathing or aversion, which signifies a strong dislike or hatred towards someone or something.
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly warns against arrogance and its detrimental consequences. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 37, Allah says,
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.
This verse highlights the futility of arrogance and the insignificance of human beings in the grand scheme of creation.
Furthermore, in Surah Luqman, verse 18, Allah advises,
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
Here, Allah emphasizes the dislike He has for those who exhibit arrogance and pride.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the negative consequences that arise from arrogance. When a person becomes consumed by their own self-importance, they develop a sense of superiority over others. This leads to a disdainful attitude towards those they consider beneath them. This arrogance breeds animosity, hatred, and loathing towards others.
By reflecting on this Hadith, we can recognize the importance of humility and the dangers of arrogance. Arrogance not only distances us from our fellow Muslims but also creates a barrier between us and Allah. It prevents us from seeking knowledge, accepting advice, and acknowledging our own flaws and weaknesses.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He understood the detrimental effects of arrogance and consistently emphasized the importance of humility. His teachings and actions serve as a shining example for Muslims to follow.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the destructive nature of arrogance and the resulting loathing it brings. By humbling ourselves and recognizing our own limitations, we can foster unity, love, and compassion within the Muslim community. Let us strive to embody the qualities of humility and modesty, as exemplified by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and distance ourselves from the poisonous trait of arrogance. May Allah protect us from the perils of arrogance and guide us on the path of humility.
