إنَّ هذِهِ النُّفُوسَ طُلَعَةٌ، إنْ تُطيعُوها تَنْزِ عْ بِكُمْ إلى شَرِّ غايَة۔
Verily these souls are very desirous, if you obey them they will lead you to the depths of evil.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the nature of human souls and their inclination towards desires. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate of knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the treacherous nature of our souls. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.
The word "nufus" in Arabic refers to the souls or inner selves of human beings. It represents the desires, inclinations, and emotions that reside within us. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes these souls as "tul'ah," which means they are very desirous or eager. This implies that our souls are constantly seeking fulfillment and satisfaction, often driven by worldly desires and temptations.
The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that if we blindly obey these desires, they will lead us towards the depths of evil. This is a powerful reminder for us as Muslims to be cautious and mindful of our actions. We must not let our desires control us, but rather, we should strive to align our actions with the teachings of Islam.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the nature of our souls and the importance of self-control. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:53),
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse emphasizes that our souls have a tendency to command us towards evil, unless we seek Allah's mercy and guidance.
In Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) further explains the nature of the soul, stating,
But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
This verse highlights the inclination of our souls towards worldly desires and pleasures. It reminds us that our ultimate goal should be the Hereafter, and we should not let our desires distract us from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a wake-up call for us as Muslims. It reminds us to be vigilant and not to succumb to the whims and desires of our souls. We must strive to control our desires and align them with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling into the depths of evil and ensure that our actions are in accordance with the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
For example, let's consider the desire for wealth and material possessions. While it is natural to desire financial stability, if this desire becomes an obsession and leads us to engage in unethical or unlawful means to acquire wealth, it can lead us down a path of corruption and injustice. However, if we control our desires and seek lawful means of earning a livelihood, we can use our wealth for the betterment of society, fulfilling our obligations towards the less fortunate, and earning the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Similarly, the desire for power and authority can be a double-edged sword. If we let our egos and ambitions drive us to oppress others and seek dominance over them, it can lead to tyranny and injustice. However, if we use our positions of authority to serve and uplift others, to establish justice and promote the values of Islam, it can be a means of attaining nearness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to be mindful of the desires and inclinations of our souls. We must not blindly obey these desires, but rather, we should strive to control them and align them with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling into the depths of evil and ensure that our actions are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our desires and lead a righteous life.
