One who continuously worries is overpowered by sorrow.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Grief)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Mani stadama alhamma ghalaba 'alayhi alhuzn.

This Hadith highlights the negative consequences of continuous worry and anxiety. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "hamm" in Arabic refers to worry or anxiety. It is a state of constant preoccupation with negative thoughts and concerns. The word "ghalaba" means to overpower or prevail over someone. And "huzn" means sorrow or grief. Therefore, the Hadith can be understood as follows:

One who continuously worries is overpowered by sorrow.

The Quran provides us with guidance on how to deal with worry and anxiety. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) knows our capabilities and will not burden us with more than we can handle. Therefore, excessive worry goes against the belief in Allah's mercy and wisdom.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 23, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love.

This verse teaches us that true happiness and contentment come from acts of selflessness and giving. When we are consumed by worry, we are unable to focus on the needs of others and miss out on the blessings that come from helping others.

Continuous worry can have detrimental effects on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It drains our energy, impairs our decision-making abilities, and hinders our productivity. It also prevents us from fully enjoying the present moment and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and trusting in Allah's plan. By constantly worrying, we allow sorrow to overpower us, leading to a cycle of negativity and despair. Instead, we should turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in prayer and seek His guidance and support.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. He understood the detrimental effects of worry and emphasized the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of distress. His teachings remind us to have faith in Allah's plan and to seek solace in His remembrance.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the negative consequences of continuous worry. It reminds us to trust in Allah's plan and to seek His guidance and support. By doing so, we can overcome sorrow and find peace and contentment in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to overcome our worries and fill our hearts with tranquility and faith.
