مُعاجَلَةُ الاِنْتِقامِ مِنْ شِيَمِ اللِّئامِ۔
Being hasty in taking revenge is from the traits of the wicked.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Revenge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Being hasty in taking revenge is from the traits of the wicked.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of patience and forbearance when faced with wrongdoing or harm. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that seeking immediate revenge is a characteristic of the wicked, implying that it goes against the teachings of Islam.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (mu'ajalah) "مُعاجَلَةُ" refers to hastiness or impatience, while (al-intiqam) "الاِنْتِقامِ" means revenge. Lastly, (shiyam) "شِيَمِ" refers to the traits or characteristics of individuals.
The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of patience and forgiveness. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 16:126)
And if you punish, then punish with the like of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.
This verse encourages Muslims to respond to harm or wrongdoing with a measured and proportionate response, rather than seeking immediate revenge. It emphasizes the virtue of patience and highlights its superiority over impulsive actions.
Furthermore, in Surah Ash-Shura, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 42:40)
The recompense of an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation, his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, stating that those who choose to pardon and reconcile will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It further highlights that Allah does not favor those who engage in wrongdoing.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith aligns perfectly with these Quranic teachings. It reminds us that seeking immediate revenge is not only counterproductive but also reflects the traits of the wicked. By rushing to retaliate, one may perpetuate a cycle of violence and harm, causing further harm to themselves and others. Instead, Islam encourages us to exercise patience, forgiveness, and reconciliation, as these qualities are indicative of righteousness and wisdom.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, which is evident in this Hadith. His own life serves as a profound example of patience and forgiveness. Despite facing numerous injustices and betrayals, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) consistently displayed forbearance and sought peaceful resolutions whenever possible. His teachings and actions continue to inspire Muslims to follow the path of patience and forgiveness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of restraining ourselves from seeking immediate revenge. It reminds us that patience and forgiveness are virtuous qualities that reflect the teachings of Islam. By embodying these qualities, we can break the cycle of violence and promote peace and harmony in our lives and society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to follow the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt and implement them in our daily lives.
