اَلقَلْبُ مُصْحَفُ الفِكْرِ۔
The heart is the book of reflection.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Heart)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "القلب مصحف الفكر" which translates to
The heart is the book of reflection.
This impactful saying emphasizes the significance of the heart as the repository of our thoughts, beliefs, and contemplations. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (qalb) "قلب" in Arabic refers to the heart, both in its physical and spiritual sense. In the Quran, the heart is often mentioned as the center of understanding, belief, and spirituality. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46),
Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.
The word (mus'haf) "مصحف" in Arabic refers to a book or a written document. It is derived from the root word (sahafa) "صَحَفَ", which means to write or record. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares the heart to a book, emphasizing its role as a receptacle for our thoughts and reflections.
The Hadith highlights the importance of introspection and self-reflection. Just as a book contains knowledge and wisdom, the heart contains the thoughts, beliefs, and reflections that shape our character and actions. It serves as a record of our intentions, desires, and aspirations.
The Quran supports this concept of the heart as the seat of reflection and understanding. In Surah Al-Hajj (22:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that it is the hearts that grow blind, not the eyes. This verse emphasizes that true understanding and perception come from the heart, not merely from the physical senses.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:16), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Has not the time come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth?
This verse highlights the importance of cultivating a humble and submissive heart, one that is receptive to the remembrance of Allah and the guidance of the Quran.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly reflect upon their thoughts and intentions. It urges us to be mindful of the contents of our hearts, ensuring that they are aligned with the teachings of Islam. By regularly examining our hearts and purifying them from negative traits such as arrogance, envy, and greed, we can strive towards spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This Hadith also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom. Just as a book contains valuable information, the heart should be filled with beneficial knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom, and his statement emphasizes the significance of acquiring knowledge and using it to shape our thoughts and actions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the heart is the book of reflection. It emphasizes the importance of introspection, self-reflection, and seeking knowledge. By nurturing our hearts with the remembrance of Allah and aligning our thoughts and intentions with the teachings of Islam, we can strive towards spiritual growth and a deeper connection with our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to purify our hearts and fill them with beneficial knowledge.
