لَيْسَ مِنَ التَّوْفيقِ كُفْرانُ النِّعَمِ۔
Ingratitude for blessings is not a success [rather it is a failure].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ingratitude)
Bismillah (In the name of Allah),
All praise is due to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. We seek His blessings and guidance. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Ingratitude for blessings is not a success [rather it is a failure].
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of recognizing and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "tawfiq" in Arabic refers to success, guidance, and the ability to do what is right. It is a divine favor from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that enables a person to achieve righteousness and fulfill their purpose in life. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that ingratitude for blessings is not a manifestation of true success. It is a failure because it indicates a lack of appreciation and acknowledgment of the favors bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of gratitude and warn against ingratitude. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By expressing gratitude, we acknowledge Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) favors and open the doors for further blessings.
In another verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nahl (16:18),
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse reminds us that the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) are countless and beyond our ability to fully comprehend or enumerate. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to be grateful for these blessings, recognizing that ingratitude is a failure to acknowledge the immeasurable favors bestowed upon us.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their lives and recognize the blessings they have been granted. It is a call to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and appreciation, as this is an essential component of true success. Gratitude not only pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but it also brings peace and contentment to the heart of the believer.
When we are ungrateful for the blessings in our lives, we risk losing them or diminishing their value. Ingratitude leads to a sense of entitlement and dissatisfaction, causing us to overlook the countless blessings that surround us. It blinds us to the beauty of the present moment and prevents us from fully experiencing the joy and contentment that comes with gratitude.
Furthermore, ingratitude can lead to a downward spiral of negativity and discontentment. When we fail to appreciate the blessings in our lives, we become more susceptible to envy, greed, and dissatisfaction. This can have detrimental effects on our relationships, our mental well-being, and our overall sense of fulfillment.
In contrast, gratitude opens the doors to even greater blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we express gratitude for the blessings we have, we attract more blessings into our lives. This is because gratitude is a form of worship that pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and invites His favor. It is a means of strengthening our relationship with Him and deepening our faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that ingratitude for blessings is not a sign of success, but rather a failure. Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of our faith and a key to true success. By recognizing and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we not only please Him but also experience greater contentment and fulfillment in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be grateful for His blessings and may He increase us in His favor.
