— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Deliberation [and carefulness] in speech saves one from faltering and error.

This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of being cautious and thoughtful in our words, as it can protect us from making mistakes and falling into sin.

The word (tathabbatu) "تَثَبُّتُ" in the Hadith refers to deliberation or carefulness in speech. It implies taking the time to think before speaking, ensuring that our words are accurate, appropriate, and in line with the teachings of Islam. This quality of tathabbat is a reflection of the wisdom and knowledge of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his eloquence and precision in speech.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse reminds us of the importance of speaking in the best manner, as it promotes unity and discourages the influence of Satan.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse is a testament to the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who was known for his impeccable speech and conduct. It serves as a reminder for us to strive for excellence in our own speech, following the example of the Prophet () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

When we carefully consider our words before speaking, we are more likely to avoid faltering and error. This can have profound consequences in our relationships, both with Allah and with our fellow Muslims. For example, when we speak without deliberation, we may unintentionally say something hurtful or offensive, causing harm to others. By practicing tathabbat, we can prevent such mistakes and maintain harmony in our interactions.

Moreover, being careful in our speech also helps us avoid spreading false information or engaging in gossip. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from negative assumptions and backbiting, which can lead to the destruction of relationships and the spread of discord within the Muslim community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of tathabbat, or deliberation in speech. By carefully considering our words before speaking, we can avoid faltering and error, and maintain harmony in our relationships. This practice aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of speaking in the best manner and avoiding harmful speech. Let us strive to embody the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad () in our speech, for it is through our words that we can either bring people closer to Islam or push them away. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to speak with wisdom and kindness, and protect us from the pitfalls of careless speech.
