— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Correctness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Correctness is one of the branches of deliberation.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of making sound and well-thought-out decisions. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sawab) "صَوَاب" in Arabic, translated as "correctness," refers to the act of being right, accurate, or in accordance with the truth. It signifies the importance of making decisions that align with the principles of justice, wisdom, and righteousness. It implies that deliberation should not be hasty or impulsive, but rather based on careful analysis and consideration.
The term (furu' al-rawiyyah) "فُروعِ الرَّوِيَّةِ" can be understood as the branches or offshoots of deliberation. This phrase highlights that correctness is just one aspect of the broader concept of deliberation. It suggests that deliberation encompasses various elements, such as wisdom, knowledge, foresight, and understanding.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of making correct and well-informed decisions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269),
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.
This verse highlights the significance of wisdom in decision-making and acknowledges that it is a blessing bestowed upon individuals by Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises the believers,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse encourages Muslims to verify the information they receive before acting upon it, emphasizing the importance of correctness and avoiding harm caused by hasty judgments.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that deliberation is not limited to mere correctness but encompasses a broader understanding of the consequences and implications of our decisions. It urges us to consider the long-term effects and potential outcomes of our actions, ensuring that they align with the principles of justice, equity, and righteousness.
For example, when making decisions in matters of governance, it is crucial to consider the welfare and well-being of the people, as well as the long-term stability and prosperity of the society. This requires a deep understanding of the principles of justice and the ability to foresee the potential consequences of different courses of action.
Similarly, in personal matters, such as resolving conflicts or making choices that impact our relationships, it is essential to deliberate and consider the potential effects on ourselves and others involved. By doing so, we can strive to make decisions that promote harmony, understanding, and fairness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the essence of this hadith throughout his life. His decisions and actions were guided by a deep understanding of the Quranic teachings and a profound awareness of the consequences they would yield. He was known for his ability to analyze situations from multiple perspectives and make choices that upheld justice and righteousness.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of correctness as one of the branches of deliberation. It urges us to make well-informed decisions that align with the principles of justice, wisdom, and righteousness. By doing so, we can strive to create a society that is guided by sound judgment, fairness, and compassion. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to make correct and righteous decisions in all aspects of our lives.
