Hadith #5695

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصَّدَقَةُ كَنْزٌ۔" which translates to

Charity is a treasure.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect or school of thought.

The word (sadaqah) "صَدَقَة" in Arabic refers to acts of charity and giving. It encompasses various forms of benevolence, including giving money, food, clothing, or any other form of assistance to those in need. It is an act of selflessness and compassion, motivated by the desire to please Allah and help fellow human beings.

The word (kanz) "كَنْزٌ" means treasure or wealth. It signifies something of great value that is cherished and protected. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the immense worth and significance of charity in the eyes of Allah.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah repeatedly emphasizes the importance of charity. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261, Allah says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse beautifully illustrates the concept of charity as a treasure. Just as a seed sown in the ground multiplies and yields a bountiful harvest, the act of giving in the way of Allah multiplies and brings abundant rewards. The treasure of charity not only benefits the recipient but also brings blessings and abundance to the giver.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that charity is not limited to material possessions alone. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 263, Allah says,

Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Free of need and Forbearing.

This verse reminds us that acts of kindness, forgiveness, and good manners are also forms of charity. They are treasures that enrich our relationships, purify our hearts, and earn us the pleasure of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to view charity as a treasure that we should actively seek and preserve. It reminds us that our wealth and resources are not solely for our own benefit but are a means to fulfill our duty towards others. By giving generously and selflessly, we accumulate a treasure that is not bound by worldly limitations but extends into the realm of the hereafter.
