إنَّما المَجْدُ أنْ تُعْطِيَ فِي الغُرْمِ، وتَعْفُوَ عَنِ الجُرْمِ۔
erily distinction is nothing but your giving that which you owe [of the rights of others] and forgiving the offences [of others].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Distinction)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily distinction is nothing but your giving that which you owe [of the rights of others] and forgiving the offenses [of others].
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our obligations towards others and forgiving their mistakes and transgressions.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining its key words and their implications. The word "distinction" refers to honor, nobility, and greatness. It signifies the elevated status that one can attain in the eyes of Allah and the people. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true distinction lies not in material wealth or worldly achievements, but in fulfilling our responsibilities towards others and showing forgiveness.
The word "giving" in the Hadith refers to fulfilling the rights and obligations we owe to others. This includes fulfilling our financial obligations, such as paying back debts, giving charity, and providing for the needs of our family and community. It also encompasses fulfilling our moral and social responsibilities, such as being kind, just, and compassionate towards others.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177:
It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East or the West, but righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving wealth to those in need as a sign of righteousness. It highlights that true distinction lies in fulfilling our obligations towards others, especially those who are less fortunate. By giving generously and selflessly, we not only fulfill our duties but also attain a higher level of honor and distinction in the sight of Allah.
The second part of the Hadith focuses on forgiveness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true distinction also lies in forgiving the offenses of others. This means that we should not hold grudges or seek revenge when someone wrongs us. Instead, we should forgive them and let go of any resentment or ill feelings.
In Surah Al-Imran, verse 134, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of restraining anger and pardoning others. It teaches us that forgiveness is a noble quality that is beloved to Allah. By forgiving others, we not only attain distinction in the sight of Allah but also contribute to a harmonious and peaceful society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified these teachings throughout his life. His knowledge and wisdom were renowned, and he was known for his generosity and forgiveness. He forgave those who wronged him, even in the most difficult circumstances. His actions serve as a powerful example for us to follow.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true distinction lies in fulfilling our obligations towards others and forgiving their offenses. By giving generously and selflessly, and by practicing forgiveness, we attain honor and greatness in the sight of Allah. Let us strive to embody these qualities in our lives and seek the true distinction that comes from fulfilling our responsibilities and showing compassion towards others. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness.
