(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَعَ الوَرَعِ يُثْمِرُ العَمَلُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of piety in the fruition of one's actions. To understand this Hadith in depth, let us analyze the key words and their meanings.

1. (With piety) "مَعَ الوَرَعِ": The word "وَرَعِ" refers to piety, righteousness, and the fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses a deep sense of consciousness and awareness of one's actions, thoughts, and intentions, with the aim of seeking Allah's pleasure and avoiding His displeasure.

The significance of piety in Islam is highlighted in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous (أَتْقَاكُمْ).

2. (Actions bear fruit) "يُثْمِرُ": The word "يُثْمِرُ" conveys the idea that actions, when accompanied by piety, yield fruitful outcomes. It signifies that the sincerity and righteousness of one's deeds enhance their impact and bring about positive results in this world and the Hereafter.

The concept of actions bearing fruit is beautifully illustrated in the Quran in Surah Al-Zumar (39:10):

Say, 'O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.'

Reflecting upon the Hadith and its connection to the Quranic verses, we can understand that piety is not merely a superficial act but a state of the heart that permeates every aspect of a Muslim's life. It is through piety that our actions become meaningful and impactful, both in this world and the Hereafter.

When we perform acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, giving charity, or seeking knowledge, it is the presence of piety that elevates these actions and makes them sincere and accepted by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Without piety, our deeds may become empty rituals devoid of spiritual essence.

Piety also serves as a guiding principle in our interactions with others. It encourages us to be just, compassionate, and honest in our dealings, thereby fostering harmony and unity within the Muslim community and society at large. The Quran emphasizes the importance of piety in relationships in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

Furthermore, the Hadith reminds us that the fruits of our actions are not limited to this worldly life. The rewards and blessings of our righteous deeds will continue to manifest in the Hereafter, where they will be a source of eternal happiness and success. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46):

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that piety is the key ingredient that gives meaning and value to our actions. It is through piety that our deeds become fruitful and beneficial, both in this world and the Hereafter. By cultivating piety in our hearts, we can strive to be better Muslims, fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and serving humanity with sincerity and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody piety in all aspects of our lives and may our actions bear abundant fruit.
