Fulfilling promises is from the signs of distinction.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Fulfilling promises is from the signs of distinction.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement in light of the Quran.
The word (Injaaz) "إنْجازُ" in the Hadith refers to the act of fulfilling or completing something. It signifies the importance of fulfilling one's promises and commitments. This word emphasizes the significance of keeping one's word and being trustworthy, which is a trait highly valued in Islam.
The word (al-wa'd) "الوَعْدِ" in the Hadith refers to a promise or a commitment made by an individual. It can be a pledge, an agreement, or a vow. Fulfilling these promises is not only a sign of integrity and honor but also a reflection of one's faith and righteousness.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of fulfilling promises in the Quran. In Surah Al-Isra (17:34), Allah says,
And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
This verse highlights the accountability we will face regarding the promises we make in this life. It reminds us that fulfilling our commitments is a fundamental aspect of our faith and will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah says,
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse emphasizes the obligation of fulfilling all contracts and agreements, including promises made to others. It serves as a reminder that keeping our word is not only a moral duty but also a religious obligation.
The consequences of fulfilling promises are far-reaching. When individuals consistently fulfill their commitments, it fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and promotes harmony within society. It creates an environment of honesty and reliability, where people can rely on one another. Conversely, when promises are broken, it leads to disappointment, mistrust, and discord.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of fulfilling promises as a sign of distinction. By adhering to our commitments, we distinguish ourselves from those who are unreliable and untrustworthy. It reflects our character and integrity, elevating us in the eyes of others and earning their respect.
Moreover, fulfilling promises is not limited to our interactions with fellow human beings. It extends to our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as well. When we make a promise to Allah, such as fulfilling our religious obligations or seeking forgiveness, it is imperative that we fulfill these promises with sincerity and devotion. Allah says in Surah Al-Imran (3:76),
Indeed, whoever fulfills his commitments and fears Allah - then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of upholding our promises and commitments. It is a quality that distinguishes us as Muslims and reflects our faith and righteousness. By fulfilling our promises, we not only earn the trust and respect of others but also strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to be people of integrity, always true to our word, and fulfill our promises as a sign of distinction and a means to attain the pleasure of Allah.
