Hadith #5199

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مادُونَ الشَّرَهِ عَفافٌ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Everything other than voraciousness is chastity.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. The word (madun) "مادُونَ" means "other than" or "besides." It implies that everything apart from a particular quality or attribute is being referred to. The word (sharah) "الشَّرَهِ" can be translated as "voraciousness" or "greed." It refers to an insatiable desire for more, especially in terms of material possessions or wealth. And finally, the word (afaf) "عَفافٌ" means "chastity" or "moderation." It signifies the state of being content and satisfied with what one possesses, without indulging in excessive desires.

To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of being content with what Allah has provided us, both in terms of material possessions and spiritual blessings. It emphasizes the need for moderation and balance in our desires and actions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on thee, the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world: but do thou good, as Allah has been good to thee, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do mischief.

This verse reminds us that while it is important to strive for success in this world, we should not let our desires for wealth and possessions consume us. We should always remember our ultimate goal of attaining success in the Hereafter and use our blessings to do good and benefit others.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. He teaches us that true chastity lies in being content and moderate in our desires, particularly when it comes to material possessions. Voraciousness, or an insatiable greed for more, is contrary to the concept of chastity. It leads to dissatisfaction, envy, and a constant pursuit of worldly pleasures, which can ultimately lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
