ما أفْحَشَ كَريمٌ قَطُّ۔
An honourable person never uses obscene language, ever.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obscenity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما أفْحَشَ كَريمٌ قَطُّ۔
This can be translated as,
An honourable person never uses obscene language, ever.
In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the noble character of a true believer and emphasizes the importance of refraining from using vulgar and offensive language.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (afhasha) "أفْحَشَ" refers to something that is obscene, indecent, or vulgar. It encompasses any form of speech or behavior that is offensive, disrespectful, or contrary to the principles of modesty and decency. The word (karim) "كَريمٌ" refers to an honorable, noble, and generous person. It denotes someone who possesses high moral values, integrity, and dignity.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of maintaining good speech and avoiding indecent language. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the believers as those who
turn away from ill speech.
This verse emphasizes the need for Muslims to distance themselves from any form of vulgar or offensive language.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to all Muslims of the importance of guarding our tongues and speaking with kindness and respect. It highlights the fact that an honorable person, regardless of their status or position, never stoops to using obscene language. This noble characteristic is a reflection of the believer's commitment to upholding the principles of Islam and emulating the exemplary conduct of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
The consequences of using obscene language are far-reaching. It not only tarnishes one's own reputation but also affects the social fabric of the community. Obscene language can lead to discord, animosity, and the erosion of trust among individuals. It goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of fostering unity, harmony, and respect within society.
By refraining from using obscene language, Muslims demonstrate their commitment to the principles of Islam and their respect for others. They create an environment of positivity, where words are used to uplift, inspire, and bring people closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This noble characteristic also reflects the knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was renowned for his eloquence and profound understanding of the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for all Muslims to refrain from using obscene language. It highlights the importance of maintaining good speech and embodying the noble qualities of an honorable believer. By adhering to this teaching, Muslims can contribute to the creation of a society that is characterized by kindness, respect, and harmony. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to speak with wisdom and righteousness, and may He grant us the strength to uphold the teachings of Islam in all aspects of our lives.
