اَلا وإنَّ أخْوَفَ ما أخافُ عَلَيْكُمْ اِتِّباعُ الهَوى، وطُولُ الأمَلِ۔
Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is [the result of your] following vain desires and having lengthy aspirations.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he expresses his concern for the Muslim ummah by highlighting the two things that he fears the most for them: following vain desires and having lengthy aspirations. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The word (hawa) "هَوَى" in Arabic refers to vain desires, whims, and inclinations that are driven by one's own ego and personal preferences. It is a deviation from the path of righteousness and guidance that Allah has prescribed for us. The Quran warns us against following our desires, as it can lead us astray from the straight path. Allah says in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50),
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is cautioning us about the dangers of succumbing to our whims and desires, as they can cloud our judgment and lead us away from the truth. Following our desires can lead to disobedience to Allah's commands, indulging in sinful acts, and neglecting our obligations as Muslims. It is a constant struggle to resist the temptations of our desires and instead prioritize obedience to Allah's commands.
The second aspect that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions is having lengthy aspirations or prolonged hopes. This refers to having unrealistic expectations and ambitions that distract us from focusing on the present and fulfilling our duties. It is natural to have aspirations and goals in life, but when these aspirations become excessive and consume our thoughts and actions, they can lead to neglecting our responsibilities and losing sight of our ultimate purpose.
The Quran advises us to strike a balance between worldly aspirations and the pursuit of the hereafter. Allah says in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:9),
O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers.
This verse reminds us not to be consumed by our worldly desires and ambitions, but rather to prioritize our relationship with Allah and the pursuit of righteous deeds.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is cautioning us against becoming so engrossed in our aspirations and desires that we lose sight of our spiritual journey and the ultimate purpose of our existence. We should strive for success in this world, but not at the expense of neglecting our religious obligations and losing focus on the hereafter.
The consequences of following vain desires and having lengthy aspirations are manifold. When we prioritize our own desires over the guidance of Allah, we risk falling into sin and disobedience. This can lead to a spiritual decline, distance from Allah, and a loss of inner peace and contentment. Similarly, when we become consumed by our aspirations and ambitions, we may neglect our duties towards our families, communities, and most importantly, our relationship with Allah.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-awareness and self-discipline. We must constantly evaluate our intentions and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of the Quran. By seeking knowledge, understanding, and implementing the Quranic teachings in our lives, we can protect ourselves from the pitfalls of following vain desires and having lengthy aspirations.
In conclusion, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his deep concern for the ummah by highlighting the dangers of following vain desires and having lengthy aspirations. These two aspects can lead us astray from the straight path and distract us from fulfilling our religious obligations. By seeking guidance from the Quran and striving for self-discipline, we can protect ourselves from these pitfalls and lead a life that is pleasing to Allah. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome our desires and aspirations and guide us on the path of righteousness.
