Travelling is one of the two torments.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Travel)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Travelling is one of the two torments.

This statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the challenges and difficulties that can be associated with traveling. To fully comprehend the depth and significance of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words used in this Hadith.

The word (سَفَرُ) "safar" in Arabic refers to the act of traveling or journeying from one place to another. It encompasses both physical and spiritual journeys. The word (أَحَدُ) "ahad" means "one" or "one of." And the word (ٱلعَذَابَيْنِ) "azabayn" means "two torments" or "two hardships."

To understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of our capabilities and does not place upon us a burden that we cannot handle.

Traveling, whether it be for business, pleasure, or any other reason, can indeed be challenging. It often involves leaving the comfort of our homes, families, and familiar surroundings. It can be physically exhausting, mentally draining, and emotionally demanding. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us that He will not burden us beyond our capacity. Therefore, even though traveling may bring difficulties, we have the strength to endure and overcome them.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of patience and perseverance in times of hardship. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and it is through patience and steadfastness that we can navigate through them.

Similarly, traveling can also be seen as a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It exposes us to unfamiliar environments, different cultures, and various challenges. It tests our adaptability, resilience, and ability to overcome obstacles. Just as the patient are promised glad tidings in the face of difficulties, those who remain patient and steadfast during their travels will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement can also be understood in the context of the spiritual journey. In Islam, the ultimate goal is to seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and attain His pleasure. This journey requires effort, sacrifice, and perseverance. It involves striving against our desires, purifying our hearts, and constantly seeking knowledge and guidance.

Just as traveling can be physically and mentally demanding, the spiritual journey also requires discipline, self-reflection, and self-improvement. It can be challenging to resist temptations, overcome our weaknesses, and maintain a steadfast connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). However, the rewards of this journey are immense, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises His guidance, mercy, and eternal bliss to those who strive in His path.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that traveling, both in the physical and spiritual sense, can be challenging and demanding. However, through the Quranic teachings of Allah's mercy, our capacity to bear burdens, the importance of patience, and the rewards of the spiritual journey, we can find strength and motivation to overcome the hardships associated with traveling. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to navigate through the challenges of life and guide us on the path of righteousness.
