إذا وَصَلَتْ إلَيْكُمْ أطْرافُ النِّعَمِ فَلا تُنَفِّرُوا أقْصاها بِقِلَّةِ الشُّكْرِ۔
When the edges of blessings reach you, then do not repel their peaks by lack of gratitude.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to express gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith by examining its important words and their implications.
The word (atrafu) "أطْرافُ" refers to the edges or outskirts of blessings. It signifies that blessings come to us in various forms and from different directions. These blessings can be material, such as wealth, health, and provisions, or they can be intangible, such as knowledge, guidance, and spiritual well-being.
The word (ni'am) "نِّعَمِ" refers to the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). These blessings encompass both the apparent and hidden favors that Allah bestows upon His creation. They are countless and encompass every aspect of our lives.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to (tunaffiru) "تُنَفِّرُوا", which means to repel or push away, the (aqsaha) "أقْصاها", which refers to the peaks or highest points of these blessings. This implies that we should not allow ingratitude or lack of appreciation to diminish or devalue the blessings we receive from Allah.
To understand the significance of gratitude and its role in preserving and enhancing blessings, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7):
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the direct correlation between gratitude and the increase of blessings. When we express gratitude for the blessings we receive, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to increase us in favor. Conversely, ingratitude leads to the risk of losing those blessings and facing the severe punishment of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl (16:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse reminds us of the vastness and abundance of Allah's blessings upon us. It is impossible to fully comprehend or enumerate them. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us as Muslims to acknowledge and appreciate these blessings through gratitude.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to reflect upon the consequences of ingratitude. When we fail to express gratitude for the blessings we receive, we risk losing their value and significance. Our lack of appreciation may lead to a sense of entitlement, arrogance, and a diminishing sense of reliance on Allah.
Conversely, when we express gratitude for the blessings we receive, we cultivate a sense of humility, contentment, and reliance on Allah. Gratitude opens the doors for further blessings and increases our spiritual well-being. It strengthens our relationship with Allah and deepens our faith.
Let us reflect on the practical implications of this Hadith in our daily lives. When we are blessed with good health, wealth, knowledge, or any other form of blessings, we should express gratitude to Allah through sincere acknowledgement, praise, and acts of worship. We should not take these blessings for granted or become complacent.
Moreover, gratitude should not be limited to the blessings we perceive as significant. We should also express gratitude for the seemingly small or ordinary blessings that we often overlook, such as the ability to breathe, the beauty of nature, and the love and support of our loved ones. By recognizing and appreciating these blessings, we develop a positive and grateful mindset.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to express gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah. By doing so, we preserve and enhance these blessings, strengthen our relationship with Allah, and cultivate a sense of humility and contentment. Let us strive to be grateful Muslims, acknowledging and appreciating the countless blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us. May Allah grant us the ability to express gratitude in all aspects of our lives.
