رَأسُ العُيُوبِ الحِقْدُ۔
The cornerstone of flaws is spite.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Spite And Malice)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The cornerstone of flaws is spite.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of harboring feelings of spite and resentment towards others. To fully understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words used.
The Arabic word (ra's) "رَأسُ" translates to "cornerstone" or "foundation." It signifies the fundamental basis upon which something is built. In this context, it represents the root cause or the underlying principle. The term (uyub) "عُيُوبِ" refers to "flaws" or "defects" that exist within individuals. It encompasses both physical and moral imperfections. Lastly, (al-hiqd) "الحِقْدُ" translates to "spite" or "malice." It signifies the deep-seated resentment and ill-will that one holds towards others.
To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against harboring feelings of spite and malice in several verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and backbiting, both of which are rooted in spite and malice. Allah compares such behavior to consuming the flesh of one's own brother, highlighting the repugnance and immorality of harboring ill-will towards others. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah commands us to
not ridicule others, for they may be better than you.
These verses from the Quran demonstrate that spite and malice are not only detrimental to our own spiritual well-being but also disrupt the harmony and unity within the Muslim community. When we hold grudges and resentments towards others, we create divisions and animosity, hindering the progress and growth of the ummah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to introspect and rectify their own hearts. By eradicating feelings of spite and malice, we can foster an environment of love, compassion, and unity. The consequences of harboring spite are far-reaching, affecting not only our relationships with others but also our own spiritual growth.
When we let go of spite and replace it with forgiveness and kindness, we open ourselves up to the immense blessings and mercy of Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We create an atmosphere of love and acceptance, where individuals can thrive and contribute positively to society. By embodying the teachings of the Quran and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can build a strong and united Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to refrain from harboring feelings of spite and malice. By understanding the destructive nature of these emotions and reflecting upon the teachings of the Quran, we can strive towards purifying our hearts and fostering an environment of love, compassion, and unity within the ummah. May Allah guide us all to follow the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to overcome any negative feelings towards others.
