اَلفُجُورُ مِنْ شِيَمِ الكُفّارِ۔
Wickedness is from the traits of the disbelievers.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wickedness And Immorality)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الفجور من شيم الكفار
which translates to
Wickedness is from the traits of the disbelievers.
In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the connection between wickedness and disbelief, emphasizing that wickedness is a characteristic commonly found among those who reject faith.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (al-fujur) "الفجور" refers to wickedness, immorality, or corruption. It encompasses all forms of evil actions, thoughts, and intentions that deviate from the path of righteousness. (shaym) "شيم" refers to a trait or characteristic, while (al-kuffar) "الكفار" refers to the disbelievers, those who reject the truth of Islam.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the correlation between wickedness and disbelief. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:206),
And when it is said to him, 'Fear Allah,' pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.
This verse illustrates that wickedness stems from a lack of fear and consciousness of Allah, which is a characteristic often found among those who disbelieve.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:57), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.
This verse highlights the treacherous nature of disbelievers and their inclination towards wickedness, as they harbor hatred and ill intentions towards the believers.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, draws our attention to the inherent connection between wickedness and disbelief. Wickedness is not merely a random occurrence; rather, it is deeply rooted in the rejection of faith and the absence of moral values that Islam promotes. The disbelievers, by denying the truth and turning away from the guidance of Allah, often find themselves inclined towards wickedness and immorality.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to distance themselves from wickedness and to strive towards righteousness. It also highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of disbelief and guarding ourselves against its influence. By adhering to the teachings of Islam, we can protect ourselves from falling into the trap of wickedness and ensure that our actions are in alignment with the principles of faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Wickedness is from the traits of the disbelievers
emphasizes the intrinsic connection between wickedness and disbelief. It reminds us of the importance of upholding moral values and distancing ourselves from evil actions and intentions. By reflecting upon the Quranic verses that support this Hadith, we can deepen our understanding of the consequences and motivations behind wickedness, and strive to embody the qualities of righteousness and faith. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the influence of wickedness.
