(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الفائت لايعود" which translates to

The lost [opportunity] does not return.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to seize the opportunities presented to them in life.

The word (Al-Fa'it) "الفائت" refers to something that has been missed or lost. It signifies an opportunity or a chance that has passed by and cannot be regained. This word emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing the opportunities that come our way, as they may not come again.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities and making the most of them. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of time and the need to utilize it wisely for the pursuit of faith, good deeds, and guidance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seizing the opportunity to establish justice and righteousness, even in dealing with those who may not share the same religious beliefs.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be proactive and vigilant in recognizing and utilizing the opportunities that come their way. It highlights the transient nature of opportunities and the need to act promptly and decisively. By reflecting on this Hadith and internalizing its message, Muslims are encouraged to make the most of their time, talents, and resources in the pursuit of righteousness and the betterment of society.

For example, imagine a Muslim who has the opportunity to perform a good deed, such as helping a person in need or contributing to a charitable cause. If this opportunity is neglected or ignored, it may not present itself again in the same way. The person may later regret not seizing the chance to do good and make a positive impact. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to be mindful of the opportunities that come their way and to act upon them promptly, as they may not return.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "الفائت لايعود" conveys the profound wisdom that the lost opportunity does not return. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be proactive and vigilant in recognizing and utilizing the opportunities that come their way. By reflecting on this Hadith and aligning their actions with the teachings of the Quran, Muslims can strive to make the most of their time and resources in the pursuit of righteousness and the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and seize the opportunities that come our way and to use them for the benefit of ourselves and others.
