اَللَّجاجُ أكْثَرُ (أكْبَرُ) الأشْياءِ مَضَرَّةً فِي العاجِلِ والآجِلِ۔
Stubbornness is the most harmful of all things in this life and the next.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Stubbornness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Al-lajaj aktharul-ashya'i madarratan fil 'ajili wal-aajil.
This can be translated as,
Stubbornness is the most harmful of all things in this life and the next.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The first word is "lajaj," which refers to stubbornness or obstinacy. It signifies a refusal to change one's opinion or behavior, even in the face of evidence or reason. The second word is "akthar," which means the most or the greatest. Lastly, "ashya'i" refers to things or matters, and "madarratan" means harmful or detrimental.
To further elucidate the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse emphasizes the importance of flexibility and adaptability in our lives. Stubbornness, on the other hand, hinders our ability to adapt and grow. It prevents us from accepting new ideas, correcting our mistakes, and seeking guidance from Allah.
Another verse that sheds light on the harmful consequences of stubbornness is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), where Allah says,
Indeed, you [O Muhammad] do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills.
This verse highlights the importance of humility and openness to guidance. When we are stubborn, we close ourselves off from the guidance of Allah and the wisdom of others, leading to detrimental consequences in both this life and the hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the dangers of stubbornness. He reminds us that it is the most harmful of all things, as it prevents us from seeking knowledge, rectifying our mistakes, and growing as individuals. Stubbornness can lead to strained relationships, missed opportunities, and a stagnant spiritual journey.
Let us reflect on the consequences of stubbornness in our daily lives. Imagine a person who refuses to acknowledge their mistakes and apologize to those they have wronged. This stubbornness not only damages their relationships but also prevents them from seeking forgiveness and rectifying their behavior. Similarly, a person who is stubborn in their religious beliefs may reject the truth and fail to attain spiritual growth.
In contrast, the Quran encourages us to be open-minded and willing to change our opinions when presented with evidence. Allah says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:29),
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you.
This verse reminds us that by fearing Allah and being open to His guidance, we can overcome our stubbornness and attain His forgiveness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to avoid stubbornness in all aspects of life. It highlights the detrimental consequences of refusing to change our opinions or behaviors, both in this world and the hereafter. By being open-minded, flexible, and humble, we can seek knowledge, rectify our mistakes, and grow spiritually. May Allah guide us all to overcome our stubbornness and grant us the wisdom to follow the path of righteousness.
