بِئْسَ العادَةُ الفُضُولُ۔
Superfluity [in speech] is one of the worst habits.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Habit)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِئْسَ العادَةُ الفُضُولُ۔" This can be translated as,
Superfluity [in speech] is one of the worst habits.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom contained within this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (bis) "بِئْسَ" in Arabic refers to something that is extremely bad, evil, or detrimental. It conveys a sense of intense negativity and serves as a warning against engaging in such behavior. The word (al-'adah) "العادَةُ" means habit or custom, indicating that this statement is addressing a recurring behavior. Finally, (al-fudul) "الفُضُولُ" refers to superfluity or excessiveness, specifically in the context of speech.
To understand the gravity of this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against indulging in idle talk and wasting our words in Surah Al-Isra, verse 36:
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking with knowledge and purpose, rather than engaging in frivolous conversations.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 3, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the successful believers as those who
turn away from ill speech.
This verse highlights the significance of guarding our tongues and refraining from engaging in speech that is harmful, unnecessary, or devoid of benefit.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their speech and to avoid excessive and frivolous talk. Superfluity in speech can lead to various negative consequences. It can waste our time and energy, diverting us from more productive pursuits. It can also lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and even harm to others. Moreover, excessive speech can diminish the value and impact of our words, diluting their significance and making them less meaningful.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the importance of measured speech. He exemplified this quality throughout his life, speaking only when necessary and choosing his words carefully. His silence in certain situations spoke volumes, conveying his wisdom and restraint.
As Muslims, we should strive to emulate Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) example by being mindful of our speech. We should aim to speak with purpose, ensuring that our words are beneficial, truthful, and in accordance with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can cultivate a habit of meaningful communication and contribute positively to our personal growth and the well-being of society.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to guard our tongues and speak with knowledge and purpose. May He bless us with the ability to follow the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
