مَنْ غَلَبَتِ الدُّنيا عَلَيْهِ عَمِيَ عَمّا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ۔
One who has been overcome by this world is blind to that which is in front of him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man ghalabatid-dunya 'alayhi 'amiya 'amma bayna yadayhi.
This translates to,
One who has been overcome by this world is blind to that which is in front of him.
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the detrimental effects of being excessively attached to the materialistic aspects of this worldly life.
To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. "Ghalabatid-dunya" refers to being overwhelmed or overcome by the worldly affairs, while "amiya" signifies blindness or being unaware. "Amma bayna yadayhi" refers to that which is in front of a person, indicating the present moment or the immediate reality.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the concept mentioned in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.
This verse emphasizes the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the distractions they create, diverting our attention from the true purpose of our existence.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Takathur (102:1-2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you, until you visit the graves.
This verse highlights how the obsession with accumulating material possessions can lead to negligence and forgetfulness of the ultimate reality of death and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that excessive attachment to worldly matters blinds us from recognizing the true essence of life and the opportunities that lie before us. When our hearts are consumed by the pursuit of wealth, status, and worldly desires, we become oblivious to the spiritual and moral obligations that should guide our actions.
For instance, a person who is solely focused on accumulating wealth may neglect their duties towards their family, community, and even their own soul. They may disregard acts of charity, kindness, and compassion, failing to recognize the blessings and opportunities for growth that lie within their reach. This blindness to the present moment and the needs of others can have severe consequences on both an individual and societal level.
Moreover, being blind to the present moment can hinder our ability to seek knowledge and guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of being present and attentive to the lessons and guidance that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us through His revelations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the distractions and attachments of this world. By recognizing the temporary nature of worldly pursuits and focusing on the present moment, we can better fulfill our spiritual obligations, seek knowledge, and strive for personal growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome the allure of this world and remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.
