Hadith #6629

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل حياة" which translates to "Justice is life" in English. This amazing Hadith emphasizes the crucial role of justice in the life of a Muslim. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (adl) "عَدْل" refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It is the act of treating others with equality and ensuring that everyone receives their due rights. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, and it encompasses all aspects of life, including social, economic, and political spheres.

The word (hayat) "حَيَاة" means life. It signifies existence, vitality, and the state of being alive. It represents not only physical life but also the spiritual and intellectual aspects of human existence. Thus, when Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that justice is life, he is highlighting the essentiality of justice for the well-being and flourishing of individuals and society as a whole.

To further understand the significance of justice in Islam, we turn to the Quran, the divine book of guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice and fair dealings. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), Allah says,

Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.

This verse highlights that the purpose of sending messengers and revealing scriptures was to establish justice among people.

In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah commands the believers,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even in difficult circumstances, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.

This verse reminds us that justice should not be compromised due to personal biases or animosity towards others. Muslims are commanded to be just, even if it means going against the sentiments of a particular group.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quranic verses, we understand that justice is not merely an abstract concept but a practical and essential aspect of a Muslim's life. Justice ensures the harmonious functioning of society, protects the rights of individuals, and promotes equality and fairness. It is through the establishment of justice that individuals and communities can thrive and flourish.

When justice is upheld, it leads to a society where people can trust one another, where the weak are protected, and where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed. Conversely, the absence of justice breeds corruption, oppression, and social unrest. Therefore, justice is not only a means to achieve a balanced and righteous society but also a path towards attaining spiritual and intellectual growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled wisdom and knowledge, highlights the inseparable link between justice and life. By emphasizing the importance of justice, he reminds us that true life can only be attained when justice prevails in every aspect of our lives. As Muslims, we are called upon to embody justice in our actions, interactions, and decision-making processes, striving to establish a just society that reflects the divine values of Islam.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in upholding justice and grant us the wisdom to understand its profound significance in our lives. May we be among those who promote justice and contribute to the betterment of society.
