مِنْ حَقِّ العاقِلِ أنْ يَقْهَرَ هَواهُ قَبْلَ ضِدِّهِ۔
It is from the rights of the intelligent person to vanquish his vain desire before his adversary.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-control and the ability to overcome one's own desires and whims. The word (intelligent person) "عاقِلِ" refers to someone who possesses wisdom, understanding, and the ability to make rational decisions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that it is the right of such an individual to conquer their own vain desires before they become a hindrance or an adversary.
To further understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-control and the ability to resist one's desires. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), Allah says,
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and the need for divine mercy to overcome it. The intelligent person, as mentioned in the Hadith, recognizes this struggle and takes proactive measures to subdue their own desires.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), where Allah says,
Indeed, you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
This verse reminds us that true guidance comes from Allah alone. An intelligent person understands that their own desires can lead them astray, and thus they strive to align their actions with the guidance of Allah, seeking His help and mercy to overcome their own whims and desires.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their intellect and rationality over their base desires. By doing so, they can avoid falling into the traps of their own ego and prevent their desires from becoming their adversaries. This self-control and restraint are essential for leading a righteous and fulfilling life.
Let us consider an example to better understand the implications of this Hadith. Imagine a person who is tempted to indulge in dishonest practices to gain wealth or power. Their vain desire for material possessions or status becomes their adversary, as it leads them away from the path of righteousness and moral integrity. However, an intelligent person, as mentioned in the Hadith, would recognize the destructive nature of such desires and would strive to overcome them. They would prioritize honesty, integrity, and the well-being of others over their own selfish ambitions.
The consequences of following Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice are profound. By conquering our vain desires, we gain control over our own selves and become better equipped to make decisions based on wisdom and righteousness. This self-mastery allows us to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of Allah. It also helps us develop a strong moral character and become a source of inspiration for others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-awareness and self-discipline. It is incumbent upon every Muslim to strive towards conquering their own vain desires and aligning their actions with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can attain true success in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome our own desires and strive for righteousness. May He guide us on the path of self-control and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
