(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالقَناعَةِ يَكُونُ العِزُّ۔" which translates to
Through contentment there is honour.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of contentment in attaining true honor and dignity.
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. (al-qana'ah) "القَناعَةِ" refers to contentment, satisfaction, and being pleased with what one has. It is the state of being grateful and accepting of Allah's blessings, without yearning for more than what is necessary. (al-'izz) "العِزُّ" refers to honor, dignity, and strength. It is the state of being respected and esteemed by others.
To understand the significance of contentment in attaining honor, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:23),
So that you may not grieve over what has escaped you, nor be exultant at what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of being content with what Allah has bestowed upon us, without feeling grief over what we may lack or becoming arrogant over our blessings. True honor lies in recognizing and appreciating the blessings of Allah, rather than constantly desiring more.
Another verse that supports the concept of contentment leading to honor is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking contentment and strength from Allah, rather than relying on worldly possessions or status. By seeking contentment in Allah's presence and relying on His sustenance, one can attain true honor and stability in life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that true honor does not lie in material possessions or worldly achievements, but rather in being content with what Allah has decreed for us. When we are content with our circumstances, we are able to find peace and tranquility within ourselves, regardless of our external situation. This contentment allows us to focus on our spiritual growth and the development of our character, which in turn leads to true honor and dignity in the eyes of Allah and others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this quality of contentment and its connection to honor. Despite his immense knowledge, bravery, and leadership, he lived a simple and humble life, never seeking worldly power or wealth. His contentment with what Allah had provided him allowed him to remain steadfast in his principles and serve as a role model for Muslims throughout history.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound lesson that true honor and dignity are attained through contentment. By being grateful for what Allah has bestowed upon us and accepting His decree, we can find inner peace and strength. This contentment enables us to focus on our spiritual growth and the development of our character, ultimately leading to true honor in the sight of Allah and others. May we all strive to cultivate contentment in our lives and seek honor through the path of righteousness.
