Hadith #5819

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Silence without contemplation is dumbness.

This profound statement emphasizes the importance of thoughtful silence and discourages remaining silent without engaging in deep reflection and understanding.

Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (silence) "صَمْتُ" refers to refraining from speaking or remaining quiet. Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-An'am, verse 50, where Allah says,

Say, 'I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.' Say, 'Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?'

This verse emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect and contemplating the signs of Allah's creation.
