Hadith #7155

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The intelligent person is one who fetters his tongue.

This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of controlling one's speech and using it wisely. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (intelligent) "عاقل" in this Hadith refers to a person who possesses wisdom, understanding, and the ability to make sound judgments. It is derived from the root word "عقل" which means intellect or reason. In the context of this Hadith, intelligence is not limited to intellectual capabilities, but also encompasses emotional intelligence and self-control.

The word (tongue) "عقل" in this Hadith refers to the faculty of speech. It symbolizes our ability to communicate and express ourselves. The tongue has immense power, as it can either be a source of good or a means of causing harm. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of restraining our tongues and using them wisely.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of controlling our speech. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words carefully and speak in the best possible manner. It reminds us that our speech can either bring people closer or create division.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the consequences of uncontrolled speech, saying,

Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two-thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse highlights the importance of moderation in our actions and speech. It reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of our limitations and encourages us to focus on what is within our capacity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that intelligence lies not only in the acquisition of knowledge but also in the ability to control our tongues. By restraining our speech, we can avoid unnecessary conflicts, misunderstandings, and hurtful words. This self-discipline allows us to maintain harmonious relationships and fosters an environment of peace and unity.

When we reflect on the consequences of uncontrolled speech, we realize the immense impact it can have on our lives and the lives of others. It can damage relationships, spread rumors, incite hatred, and even lead to violence. On the other hand, when we choose our words wisely, we can inspire, uplift, and bring about positive change.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a timeless reminder for all Muslims to be mindful of their speech. It encourages us to think before we speak, to weigh our words carefully, and to use our tongues as a tool for spreading goodness and wisdom. By doing so, we can embody the true essence of intelligence and contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to control our tongues and use our speech for the betterment of ourselves and others. May He guide us to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quran in all aspects of our lives. And may He bless us with the ability to foster unity, understanding, and love among all Muslims.
