(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of patience in our lives. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (sabr) "صَبْرِ" in Arabic, which is translated as "patience" in English, holds a significance. Sabr is not simply about enduring hardships or difficulties, but it encompasses a comprehensive approach to life. It is the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of trials, to control our emotions, and to persevere in seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Hadith states that

the intelligent one holds on to patience.

This implies that those who possess wisdom and understanding recognize the immense value of patience. They understand that it is through patience that they can navigate the challenges of life with grace and resilience. Patience becomes a guiding principle for them, enabling them to make wise decisions and respond to difficulties in a manner that aligns with the teachings of Islam.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient

This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life, and it is through patience that we can find solace and reward from Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:200)

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful

This verse highlights the connection between patience and success. It reminds us that true success lies in maintaining patience and steadfastness in our faith, regardless of the challenges we face.

The Hadith also mentions that

the ignorant one returns to patience.

This refers to those who lack knowledge and understanding. Ignorance can lead to impulsive reactions, hasty decisions, and an inability to cope with difficulties. However, even the ignorant are encouraged to turn to patience as a means of seeking guidance and finding solace.

The Quran provides numerous examples of individuals who exemplified patience in the face of adversity. Prophet Ayyub (Job) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) endured severe afflictions, yet he remained patient and steadfast in his faith. Allah says, (Quran 38:44)

Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah]

Similarly, Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) faced betrayal and imprisonment, yet he maintained his patience and trust in Allah. Allah says, (Quran 12:90)

Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good

The consequences of embracing patience are manifold. Patience allows us to develop resilience, strengthen our faith, and cultivate a sense of gratitude. It enables us to maintain a positive mindset and seek solutions rather than being overwhelmed by difficulties. Patience also fosters self-control and helps us avoid impulsive actions that may lead to regret.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of patience in our daily lives. It is a virtue that enables us to navigate the challenges of this world while seeking the pleasure of Allah. Let us strive to embrace patience, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (), the Ahl al-Bayt, and the noble companions, so that we may attain success in this life and the Hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody patience in all aspects of our lives. May He bless us with the ability to hold on to patience in times of difficulty and to return to it when we falter. Ameen.
