لايُفْسِدُ التَّقْوى إلاّ غَلَبَةُ الشَّهْوَةِ۔
Nothing corrupts God-wariness but the dominance of lust.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لايُفْسِدُ التَّقْوى إلاّ غَلَبَةُ الشَّهْوَةِ۔
This Hadith highlights the relationship between God-wariness (taqwa) and the dominance of lust. To understand the beautiful message behind this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (taqwa) "تَقْوَى" refers to the consciousness and fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), which leads to righteous actions and avoidance of sins. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses piety, mindfulness, and awareness of Allah's presence in every aspect of life. Taqwa is a fundamental concept in Islam, and it is repeatedly emphasized in the Quran.
The word (ghalabah) "غَلَبَة" means dominance or overpowering. It signifies the control or mastery of something over another. In this Hadith, it refers to the overpowering influence of lust or desires over a person's taqwa. Lust, or (ash-shahwa) "الشَّهْوَة", refers to the intense desire or craving for worldly pleasures, whether it be physical desires or materialistic pursuits.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the destructive nature of unchecked desires in several verses. For example, in Surah Yusuf (12:53), Allah says,
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the human soul towards evil desires, which can corrupt one's taqwa if left unchecked.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah warns,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse emphasizes the importance of aligning our desires with the guidance of Allah, as following our own whims and desires without divine guidance leads to deviation and corruption of taqwa.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and cautious of the dominance of lust over their taqwa. Lustful desires, if given precedence over the fear of Allah, can lead to the corruption and erosion of one's God-wariness. When we allow our desires to overpower our taqwa, we become susceptible to committing sins and straying from the righteous path.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of self-control and discipline in maintaining taqwa. By recognizing the potential harm of unchecked desires, we are motivated to strive for self-restraint and moderation in our actions. This self-discipline helps us resist the allure of worldly pleasures that may lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
The consequences of succumbing to the dominance of lust are grave. It can lead to a gradual decline in one's taqwa, distancing us from the mercy and guidance of Allah. Moreover, indulging in sinful desires can have detrimental effects on our spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being. It can lead to a sense of emptiness, guilt, and dissatisfaction, as we prioritize temporary pleasures over the eternal rewards promised by Allah.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded to constantly evaluate their intentions and actions. We must strive to align our desires with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of the Quran. By nurturing our taqwa and resisting the dominance of lust, we can attain spiritual growth, inner peace, and a closer connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our desires and strengthen our God-wariness.
