مَنْ حَسُنَ يَقينُهُ حَسُنَتْ عِبادَتُهُ۔
One whose conviction is firm, his worship becomes good.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man hasuna yaqinuhu, hasunat ibadatuhu,
which translates to
One whose conviction is firm, his worship becomes good.
Let us delve into the significance behind this statement in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. "Hasuna" refers to something that is good, excellent, or beautiful. "Yaqin" means certainty or firm conviction. And "ibadah" encompasses all acts of worship, including prayer, fasting, charity, and other forms of devotion.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of having firm conviction in our faith. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights that true believers are those who have unwavering faith in Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and they do not allow doubt to weaken their commitment. Their conviction is so strong that it motivates them to strive in the cause of Allah, dedicating their wealth and lives for His sake.
When our conviction is strong, it positively impacts our worship. Our acts of worship become sincere, heartfelt, and pleasing to Allah. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:165), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.
This verse highlights that believers have a stronger love for Allah than anything or anyone else. Their conviction in the oneness of Allah and His supreme status leads them to worship Him alone, without associating partners with Him. Their worship is driven by pure love and devotion, not by worldly desires or distractions.
Furthermore, a firm conviction leads to a deep understanding of the purpose and significance of our worship. In Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51:56), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
This verse reminds us that the purpose of our existence is to worship Allah. When we have a strong conviction in this truth, our worship becomes meaningful and purposeful. We realize that every act of worship, no matter how small, is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah and fulfill our purpose in life.
Moreover, a firm conviction in Allah's presence and knowledge leads to a heightened sense of accountability in our worship. In Surah Al-Mulk (67:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Is He [not best] who created the heavens and the earth and sent down for you rain from the sky, causing to grow thereby gardens of joyful beauty which you could not [otherwise] have grown the trees thereof? Is there a deity with Allah? [No], but they are a people who ascribe equals [to Him].
This verse reminds us of Allah's power and authority as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. When we have a firm conviction in His existence and His control over all things, we become more conscious of our actions and strive to worship Him in the best possible manner. We understand that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and we avoid associating partners with Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that a firm conviction in our faith is the foundation of good worship. When our belief in Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) is unwavering, our acts of worship become sincere, meaningful, and pleasing to Allah. We are motivated to strive in His cause, love Him above all else, understand the purpose of our worship, and hold ourselves accountable for our actions. May Allah grant us the strength to strengthen our conviction and enhance our worship.
