(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disagreement)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "سَبَبُ الفُرْقَةِ اَلاِخْتِلافُ۔" which translates to

The cause of disunity is disagreement.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the importance of unity and the detrimental effects of disagreement.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (sabab) "سَبَبُ" means "cause" or "reason." It signifies that there is a specific factor that leads to disunity. The word (al-furqah) "الفُرْقَةِ" refers to disunity or division among Muslims. And finally, the word (al-ikhtilaf) "اَلاِخْتِلافُ" means "disagreement" or "differences of opinion."

To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of unity and warns against division in several verses. For example, in Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse highlights the necessity of unity among Muslims and the prohibition of division.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah advises the believers,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the detrimental consequences of disputes and disagreements, as they weaken the strength and resolve of the Muslim community.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) sheds light on the fact that disunity is not a result of external factors, but rather it is caused by disagreements among Muslims themselves. When Muslims allow their differences of opinion to overshadow their shared beliefs and values, it leads to division and disunity within the Ummah.

Disagreements can arise in various aspects of life, including religious interpretations, political ideologies, and personal opinions. While healthy discussions and debates are encouraged in Islam, it is essential to approach them with wisdom, respect, and a sincere intention to seek the truth. However, when disagreements are fueled by ego, arrogance, and a desire for power, they become a source of disunity and harm to the Muslim community.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of unity and the need to prioritize the greater good of the Ummah over personal interests. He exemplified this through his actions and teachings, always striving to bring people together and resolve conflicts.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity over disagreements. It highlights the detrimental consequences of division and emphasizes the need for respectful dialogue and a sincere intention to seek the truth. As Muslims, we should strive to foster an environment of unity, understanding, and cooperation, upholding the values of Islam and working together for the betterment of the Ummah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to unity and protect us from the causes of disunity.
