كَمْ مِنْ إنْسان أهْلَكَهُ لِسانٌ۔
How many a person has been destroyed by the tongue!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كَمْ مِنْ إنْسان أهْلَكَهُ لِسانٌ۔
This Hadith has been translated into English as,
How many a person has been destroyed by the tongue!
Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word (insan) "إنسان" refers to a human being, emphasizing the universal nature of this issue. The word (ahlaqahu) "أهْلَكَهُ" means "destroyed" or "ruined," indicating the severe consequences of the tongue's misuse. Lastly, the word (lisan) "لِسانٌ" refers to the tongue, which is the instrument through which speech is formed.
This Hadith highlights the destructive power of the tongue and serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious with their speech. The tongue has the potential to cause immense harm, leading to the ruin of individuals and communities. It is a potent tool that can either build bridges or burn them down.
The Quran provides ample evidence of the significance of speech and the responsibility that comes with it. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (17:36)
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse reminds us of the importance of speaking only when we have knowledge and avoiding spreading rumors or false information. It emphasizes the need for accountability for our words.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises, (49:12)
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse cautions against making negative assumptions about others and engaging in backbiting, which is akin to consuming the flesh of one's brother. It highlights the importance of guarding our tongues and refraining from harmful speech.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith draws our attention to the consequences of our words. Just as physical harm can lead to the destruction of a person, verbal harm can have equally devastating effects. The tongue has the power to spread rumors, sow discord, and tarnish reputations. It can break relationships, incite hatred, and cause irreparable damage to individuals and communities.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the need to exercise restraint and wisdom in our speech. We should strive to use our tongues for good, promoting unity, understanding, and compassion. We must think before we speak, ensuring that our words are beneficial, truthful, and uplifting.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his knowledge and wisdom. His words carry immense weight and serve as a guide for Muslims in all aspects of life. Through this Hadith, he emphasizes the importance of controlling our tongues and using them responsibly. May we all strive to follow his example and be mindful of the power of our words. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to speak with wisdom and kindness, and protect us from the destructive consequences of our tongues.
