يُسْتَدَلُّ على إدْبارِ الدُّوَلِ بِأرْبَع: تَضييعُ الأُصولِ، والتَّمَسُّكُ بِالغُرُورِ، وَ تَقْديمُ الأراذِلِ، وتأخيرُ الأفاضلِ۔
The decline [and imminent fall] of empires is evinced by four things: neglecting the principles [and core values of justice and equity], clinging to vanities, promotion of the wicked and demotion of the virtuous.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Alternation Of Power And Sovereignty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he provides us with valuable insights into the signs that indicate the decline and eventual downfall of empires. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words used in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The first word to analyze is "إدْبارِ الدُّوَلِ" which translates to
the decline [and imminent fall] of empires.
This phrase refers to the deterioration and eventual collapse of powerful nations or civilizations. It signifies a decline in moral values, justice, and equity within the society, leading to its downfall.
The next phrase, "تَضييعُ الأُصولِ," translates to
neglecting the principles [and core values of justice and equity].
This highlights the importance of upholding the fundamental principles of justice, fairness, and equality in any society. Neglecting these principles leads to a weakening of the social fabric and ultimately contributes to the decline of empires.
The phrase "التَّمَسُّكُ بِالغُرُورِ" means "clinging to vanities." This refers to the attachment to superficial and materialistic pursuits, such as wealth, power, and worldly desires. When a society becomes obsessed with these vanities and loses sight of higher values, it becomes vulnerable to decline and destruction.
The third phrase, "تَقْديمُ الأراذِلِ," translates to
promotion of the wicked.
This indicates a society's inclination to elevate and empower those who are morally corrupt, dishonest, and devoid of integrity. When wicked individuals are given positions of influence and authority, it undermines the foundations of justice and righteousness, hastening the decline of empires.
Lastly, the phrase "تأخيرُ الأفاضلِ" means
demotion of the virtuous.
This refers to the suppression and marginalization of individuals who possess noble qualities, such as honesty, integrity, and piety. When virtuous individuals are sidelined and their voices are silenced, it weakens the moral fabric of society and contributes to its downfall.
To further understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's words, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice, equity, and the consequences of neglecting these principles.
In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (Quran 57:25)
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and revealed to them the Scripture and the balance that people may maintain [their affairs] in justice
This verse highlights the significance of justice as a fundamental principle that ensures the stability and prosperity of societies.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah says, (Quran 4:135)
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones.
The Quran also warns against the promotion of wickedness and the demotion of the virtuous. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah describes the consequences of the people of Prophet Lut (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) promoting wickedness and deviating from the path of righteousness. Their society was ultimately destroyed as a result of their immoral actions.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's words, we can see the profound wisdom behind his teachings. Neglecting the principles of justice and equity, clinging to vanities, promoting the wicked, and demoting the virtuous are all signs of a society's decline and impending downfall. These actions erode the moral fabric of a society, leading to social unrest, corruption, and ultimately the collapse of empires.
As Muslims, it is our duty to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and righteousness in all aspects of our lives. We must strive to promote the virtuous and reject the wicked, ensuring that our societies are built upon strong foundations that will withstand the test of time. May Allah guide us to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and protect us from the pitfalls that lead to the decline of empires.
