اَلصَّبْرُ مَرْفَعَةٌ، اَلجَزَعُ مَنْقَصَةٌ۔
Patience is an elevation; agitation is degradation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الصبر مرفعة، الجزع منقصة
which translates to
Patience is an elevation; agitation is degradation.
This beautiful saying highlights the importance of patience in our lives and the negative consequences of agitation.
To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "Sabr" is the Arabic term for patience, which encompasses the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of difficulties and trials. It is a virtue highly emphasized in Islam and is considered a means of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). "Marfa'ah" refers to elevation or raising oneself to a higher spiritual state. On the other hand, "jaz'" signifies agitation or restlessness, which leads to a decrease or degradation in one's spiritual state.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the importance of patience as a means of seeking assistance from Allah and attaining His support. By practicing patience, we elevate ourselves spiritually and strengthen our connection with the Almighty.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, be patient and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse emphasizes the need for patience in various aspects of life, including facing challenges, remaining steadfast, and maintaining a conscious awareness of Allah's presence. Through patience, we can elevate ourselves and achieve success in this life and the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the consequences of both patience and agitation. When we practice patience, we elevate ourselves spiritually and gain strength to overcome difficulties. Patience allows us to maintain a calm and composed demeanor, enabling us to make wise decisions and handle situations with grace. It is through patience that we can endure hardships and grow in our faith, ultimately leading to spiritual elevation.
On the other hand, agitation and restlessness diminish our spiritual state. When we allow ourselves to be consumed by agitation, we lose control over our emotions and actions. Agitation leads to impulsive behavior, clouded judgment, and a weakened connection with Allah. It is a state of degradation that distances us from the path of righteousness and hinders our spiritual growth.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize the immense value of patience in our lives as Muslims. Patience is not simply enduring hardships, but rather a means of elevating ourselves spiritually and strengthening our relationship with Allah. It is a virtue that allows us to navigate through the challenges of life with grace and resilience. By practicing patience, we can attain success in this world and the hereafter, while agitation only leads to spiritual degradation.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to cultivate patience in our lives and protect us from the negative consequences of agitation. May we strive to follow the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and embody the virtues of patience, seeking spiritual elevation in all aspects of our lives.
