إنَّ مَنْ باعَ نَفْسَهُ بِغَيْرِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَقَدْ عَظُمَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمِحْنَةُ۔
Indeed the one who sells his soul for anything other than Paradise suffers great tribulation.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إنَّ مَنْ باعَ نَفْسَهُ بِغَيْرِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَقَدْ عَظُمَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمِحْنَةُ۔
This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the consequences faced by those who trade their souls for anything other than Paradise. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (sells) "باعَ", which signifies the act of willingly giving up or sacrificing something in exchange for something else. Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the grave consequences that befall those who sell their souls, their ultimate spiritual worth, for anything other than Paradise. This indicates that individuals who prioritize worldly desires and material gains over the eternal bliss of the Hereafter will face immense tribulations and hardships.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 207,
And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allah. And Allah is kind to [His] servants.
This verse echoes the message of Imam Ali's Hadith, highlighting the importance of seeking the pleasure of Allah and not compromising our souls for worldly gains.
Moreover, in Surah Al-Imran, verse 185, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion?
This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and the ultimate reward that awaits those who prioritize the eternal abode of Paradise.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the Hereafter over worldly desires. By selling our souls for anything other than Paradise, we subject ourselves to great tribulations and hardships. This can manifest in various ways, such as spiritual emptiness, moral decay, and a lack of contentment in life.
When individuals prioritize material gains, fame, or worldly pleasures over the pursuit of righteousness, they may find themselves trapped in a cycle of dissatisfaction and restlessness. The pursuit of temporary pleasures often leads to a loss of spiritual fulfillment and a disconnect from the true purpose of life. Such individuals may face internal struggles, anxiety, and a constant yearning for something more meaningful.
Conversely, those who prioritize the pleasure of Allah and strive for Paradise are rewarded with peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose. They find solace in their faith, knowing that their ultimate goal is to attain the eternal bliss of the Hereafter. Their actions are guided by the principles of righteousness, justice, and compassion, leading to a life of fulfillment and tranquility.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize the pursuit of Paradise over worldly desires. By sacrificing our souls for anything other than the eternal abode of bliss, we subject ourselves to great tribulations and hardships. The Quranic verses mentioned further reinforce this message, emphasizing the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and the ultimate reward that awaits those who prioritize the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all to make choices that lead us closer to Paradise and protect us from the tribulations of selling our souls for anything less.
