مَنْ حَسُنَ يَقينُهُ يَرْجُ۔
One whose certitude is firm, has hope.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ حَسُنَ يَقينُهُ يَرْجُ۔
which translates to
One whose certitude is firm, has hope.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (hasuna) "حَسُنَ" in this Hadith means to be good, beautiful, or excellent. It refers to the state of having a strong and unwavering conviction. The word (yaqinuhu) "يَقِينُهُ" means certainty or firm belief. It signifies a deep-rooted faith that is unshakable. Finally, the word (yarju) "يَرْجُ۔" means hope or expectation.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of having firm certitude in several verses. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (22:17)
Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associated with Allah - Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, over all things, Witness.
This verse highlights that those who have firm belief in Allah and His oneness will be judged by Him on the Day of Resurrection. Their certitude in the truth of Islam gives them hope for a just judgment and eternal reward. Similarly, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:62)
Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians - those who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
Here, Allah assures the believers that their firm belief in Him and the Day of Judgment will grant them security and peace. Their certitude in the truth of their faith instills hope in their hearts, knowing that their actions will be rewarded and their fears alleviated.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand the connotation of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. One whose certitude is firm, who possesses unwavering faith in Allah and His guidance, will naturally have hope. This hope stems from the knowledge that Allah is just and will reward the believers for their righteous deeds.
When a Muslim's conviction is strong, it acts as a driving force in their life. It motivates them to strive for excellence in their worship, to seek knowledge, and to perform good deeds. Their hope is not merely wishful thinking but a confident expectation based on their firm belief in Allah's promises.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the connection between certitude and hope. When one's faith is weak or uncertain, it can lead to despair and a lack of hope. On the other hand, a strong and unwavering belief in Allah's mercy and guidance fills the heart with hope, even in the face of difficulties and challenges.
For example, when a Muslim faces trials and tribulations, their firm certitude gives them hope that Allah will guide them through the hardships and reward them for their patience. This hope provides solace and strength during difficult times, allowing them to persevere and maintain a positive outlook.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that one whose certitude is firm will have hope. This firm belief in Allah and His guidance is essential for a Muslim's spiritual growth and resilience. It motivates them to strive for excellence and gives them hope in the face of challenges. May Allah grant us all the strength to strengthen our certitude and cultivate hope in our hearts.
