اِشْتِغالُكَ بِإصْلاحِ مَعادِكَ يُنْجيكَ مِنْ عَذابِ النّارِ۔
Being occupied with improving your Hereafter will save you from the chastisement of hellfire.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Resurrection And The Hour)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being engaged in the pursuit of rectifying one's Hereafter. The word (ishtighaluka) "اِشْتِغَالُكَ" refers to being occupied or engaged in something, while (islahi) "إصْلاحِ" means improvement or rectification, and (ma'adika) "مَعَادِكَ" refers to the Hereafter. Thus, the Hadith can be understood as encouraging Muslims to be actively involved in improving their spiritual state and preparing for the Hereafter.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of striving for the Hereafter and warns against the consequences of neglecting it. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3):
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the significance of faith, righteous actions, and mutual encouragement towards truth and patience in order to attain success in the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allah, your Lord.
This verse reminds Muslims to prioritize their allegiance to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) over any worldly relationships, as it is through this dedication that they can secure their place in the Hereafter.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that our actions in this world have consequences in the Hereafter. By actively engaging in acts of worship, seeking knowledge, performing good deeds, and avoiding sins, we can ensure our salvation from the punishment of Hellfire. This Hadith encourages Muslims to reflect on their priorities and invest their time and efforts in activities that will benefit them in the eternal life to come.
For example, instead of being engrossed in worldly pursuits that have no lasting value, a Muslim should focus on acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, giving charity, and seeking knowledge. By doing so, they are actively working towards their own salvation and protection from the torment of Hellfire. This Hadith motivates Muslims to be conscious of their actions and to constantly strive for self-improvement and spiritual growth.
The consequences of neglecting the Hereafter are severe, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20):
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse reminds us that the pleasures and pursuits of this world are temporary and fleeting. They may bring temporary satisfaction, but they cannot compare to the eternal rewards and blessings of the Hereafter. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to prioritize their efforts towards the Hereafter, seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His approval.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be actively engaged in improving their Hereafter. By prioritizing acts of worship, seeking knowledge, performing good deeds, and avoiding sins, Muslims can safeguard themselves from the punishment of Hellfire. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of striving for the Hereafter and warn against the consequences of neglecting it. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to prioritize our Hereafter and protect us from the torment of Hellfire.
