(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "لاعِثارَ مَعَ صَبْر۔" This Hadith can be translated as:

There is no stumbling with patience.

Let us delve into the essence of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (ithar) "عِثَارَ" in this Hadith refers to stumbling or faltering in one's path. It signifies the challenges and obstacles that we encounter in our journey through life. On the other hand, the word (sabr) "صَبْر۔" means patience, perseverance, and steadfastness in the face of difficulties. It is the ability to remain calm and composed, to endure hardships with fortitude, and to maintain faith and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran emphasizes the importance of patience in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153):

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking assistance from Allah. It reminds us that patience is not merely a passive acceptance of difficulties, but an active reliance on Allah's guidance and support.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse encourages believers to persevere and endure in the face of challenges, reminding us that success lies in steadfastness and fear of Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that with patience, we can overcome any stumbling blocks that come our way. It reminds us that patience is not a weakness or a passive response, but a strength that empowers us to navigate through the trials and tribulations of life.

When we face difficulties, it is natural to feel overwhelmed or discouraged. However, through patience, we can transform these stumbling blocks into stepping stones towards personal growth and spiritual elevation. Patience enables us to maintain our composure, make wise decisions, and seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of adversity.

For example, imagine a person who is faced with financial hardships. Instead of succumbing to despair or resorting to unethical means, they exercise patience by seeking lawful means of sustenance and relying on Allah's provision. Through their patience, they may discover new opportunities, develop skills, and eventually overcome their financial struggles.

Moreover, patience allows us to maintain our faith and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during challenging times. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate source of guidance, help, and relief. As mentioned in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound lesson that there is no stumbling with patience. It emphasizes the importance of remaining steadfast and patient in the face of difficulties. By relying on Allah, seeking His guidance, and maintaining patience, we can overcome any obstacles that come our way. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to embody this noble quality of patience in our lives.
