The symbol of nobility is doing good to people.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Nobility And The Noble)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The symbol of nobility is doing good to people.
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of kindness, benevolence, and compassion towards others as a defining characteristic of true nobility. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in the light of the Quran.
The word (unwan) "عُنْوانُ" in the Hadith refers to a symbol or an emblem that represents a certain quality or characteristic. It is a visible sign that distinguishes and identifies a person or a group. In this context, the symbol of nobility is highlighted as (al-ihsan ila al-nas) "الإحْسانُ إلَى النّاسِ", which translates to
doing good to people.
This phrase encompasses acts of kindness, generosity, and benevolence towards others, regardless of their social status, religion, or ethnicity.
The Quranic verses beautifully support the concept of doing good to people as a symbol of nobility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195:
And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing acts of goodness, as it is beloved by Allah. It highlights that true nobility lies in the actions of those who strive to do good in their interactions with others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse encourages Muslims to work together in acts of righteousness and piety, which includes treating others with kindness and compassion. It reminds us that true nobility is not only about personal achievements but also about fostering a harmonious and just society through acts of goodness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims. It serves as a reminder that true nobility is not determined by wealth, lineage, or worldly possessions, but rather by the way we treat and serve others. By doing good to people, we emulate the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt, who were known for their compassion, generosity, and selflessness.
When we embody the symbol of nobility by doing good to people, we create a positive ripple effect in society. Our actions inspire others to follow suit, leading to a collective culture of kindness and compassion. By helping those in need, supporting the oppressed, and spreading love and mercy, we contribute to the betterment of our communities and fulfill our duty as Muslims.
Moreover, the act of doing good to people not only benefits the recipients but also has a transformative effect on ourselves. It purifies our hearts, strengthens our faith, and brings us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). As Allah says in Surah Al-Insan, verse 9:
Indeed, We have guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
This verse highlights that when we do good to others, we are guided to the path of righteousness, and our gratitude towards Allah increases.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true nobility lies in doing good to people. It emphasizes the importance of kindness, compassion, and benevolence towards others as a defining characteristic of a noble person. By following this guidance, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also contribute to the betterment of society and strengthen our relationship with Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to embody the symbol of nobility by consistently doing good to people.
