(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
حُسْنُ الشُّكْرِ يُوجِبُ الزِّيادَةَ
which translates to
Showing gratitude leads to increment.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of expressing gratitude and its impact on increasing blessings in our lives.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (husn) "حُسْنُ" means "goodness" or "excellence." It signifies the quality of gratitude that is not just ordinary, but rather exceptional and praiseworthy. The word (shukr) "الشُّكْرِ" refers to "gratitude" or "thankfulness," which involves recognizing and acknowledging the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This Quranic verse beautifully echoes the message of Imam Ali's Hadith, emphasizing the correlation between gratitude and increase in blessings. When we express gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for the countless favors He has bestowed upon us, He promises to multiply those blessings. This increase can manifest in various forms, such as spiritual growth, material provisions, and overall well-being.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Naml (27:40), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, 'I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.' And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, 'This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous.'
This verse narrates the story of Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and highlights the significance of gratitude. Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognized that the blessings bestowed upon him were a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). His gratitude was not only for the benefit of himself but also a means to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This story serves as a reminder that gratitude is not only a means to increase blessings but also a way to strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to reflect upon the blessings we have been granted and express gratitude for them. By doing so, we not only invite more blessings into our lives but also cultivate a positive mindset and a greater sense of contentment. Gratitude helps us recognize the abundance in our lives, even in times of difficulty, and fosters a deeper connection with our Creator.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that showing gratitude leads to an increase in blessings. This concept is reinforced by the Quranic verses that emphasize the correlation between gratitude and divine favor. By expressing gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His countless blessings, we not only invite more blessings into our lives but also strengthen our relationship with Him. Let us strive to embody the quality of (excellent gratitude) "حُسْنُ الشُّكْرِ" and witness the transformative power it holds in our lives as Muslims.
