(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who considers matters arrives at their [appropriate] criteria.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of deep contemplation and critical thinking in understanding and evaluating various matters. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (i'tabar) "اعْتَبَرَ" in this Hadith is derived from the root word (a'bara) "عبر", which means to consider, reflect, or ponder upon something. It implies a process of deep contemplation and thoughtful analysis. This word signifies the act of carefully examining and evaluating matters from different angles, seeking to understand their true essence and implications.
The term (al-umur) "الأُمُورَ" refers to matters or affairs. It encompasses a wide range of issues, including religious, social, ethical, and personal matters. It includes everything that requires our attention and decision-making.
The phrase (waqafa 'ala masadiqiha) "وَقَفَ عَلَىٰ مَصَادِقِهَا" means to stand upon or adhere to the appropriate criteria or standards. It implies the importance of using valid and reliable principles or guidelines in assessing and making judgments about different matters.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, reflection, and pondering upon His signs and revelations. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 190, Allah says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse encourages Muslims to contemplate the natural world and the order of the universe as signs of Allah's existence and wisdom. By reflecting upon these signs, we can arrive at a deeper understanding of the Creator and His divine attributes.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 164, Allah says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon the creation of the heavens and the earth as a means of recognizing Allah's greatness and His role as the ultimate Creator.
The Quran also encourages critical thinking and contemplation in matters of faith and morality. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse teaches Muslims to verify and investigate information before accepting or acting upon it. It highlights the importance of critical analysis and discernment in order to avoid spreading false information or causing harm to others.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) complements these Quranic teachings by emphasizing the need for deep contemplation and thoughtful analysis in all matters. It encourages Muslims to go beyond surface-level understanding and to delve into the underlying principles and criteria that govern different aspects of life.
By considering matters and standing upon their appropriate criteria, we can make informed decisions, avoid hasty judgments, and ensure that our actions align with the teachings of Islam. This approach leads to a more profound understanding of the world around us and enables us to navigate the complexities of life with wisdom and righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of critical thinking and contemplation in all matters. By deeply reflecting upon different issues and adhering to valid criteria, we can make informed decisions and align our actions with the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to contemplate and understand His signs and guide us to make choices that are pleasing to Him.
