Hadith #6656

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

مَنْ نامَ عَنْ عَدُوِّهِ أنْبَهَتْهُ المَكائِدُ۔

This can be translated as:

One who sleeps, neglecting his enemy, is jolted awake by [his] crafty schemes.

Let us delve into the meaning of important words in this Hadith. The word (naama) "نامَ" means "to sleep" or

to be in a state of unawareness.

(aduwwihi) "عَدُوِّهِ" refers to "his enemy" or "his opponent." (anbahtuhu) "أنْبَهَتْهُ" means "jolted awake" or "awakened suddenly." And (almaka'idu) "المَكائِدُ" refers to "crafty schemes" or "deceptive plots."

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30):

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

This verse highlights the importance of being vigilant and aware of the plots and schemes of our enemies. It serves as a reminder that even the noble Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) faced numerous challenges and conspiracies from his adversaries. And they schemed, and Allah schemed (against them), and Allah is the best of schemers.

Now, let us reflect on the exegesis of the Hadith itself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the consequences of being negligent towards our enemies.
