Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

مَنْ نامَ عَنْ عَدُوِّهِ أنْبَهَتْهُ المَكائِدُ۔

This can be translated as:

One who sleeps, neglecting his enemy, is jolted awake by [his] crafty schemes.

Let us delve into the meaning of important words in this Hadith. The word (naama) "نامَ" means "to sleep" or

to be in a state of unawareness.

(aduwwihi) "عَدُوِّهِ" refers to "his enemy" or "his opponent." (anbahtuhu) "أنْبَهَتْهُ" means "jolted awake" or "awakened suddenly." And (almaka'idu) "المَكائِدُ" refers to "crafty schemes" or "deceptive plots."

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30):

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

This verse highlights the importance of being vigilant and aware of the plots and schemes of our enemies. It serves as a reminder that even the noble Prophet Muhammad () faced numerous challenges and conspiracies from his adversaries. However, Allah's plans always prevail over the plans of the disbelievers.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Imran (3:54), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And they schemed, and Allah schemed (against them), and Allah is the best of schemers.

This verse emphasizes that Allah's wisdom and planning surpasses the cunning schemes of those who oppose the truth.

Now, let us reflect on the exegesis of the Hadith itself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the consequences of being negligent towards our enemies. Just as a person who falls asleep without taking precautions against their enemy will be suddenly awakened by their crafty schemes, we too must be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding ourselves against those who wish to harm us.

This Hadith serves as a powerful metaphor for the importance of being aware of the plots and strategies employed by our adversaries, whether they are physical enemies or spiritual ones. It teaches us the significance of staying alert and prepared, both in the physical and spiritual realms.

In our daily lives, we encounter various challenges and face opposition from those who may seek to harm us or hinder our progress. By being aware of their intentions and actions, we can take appropriate measures to protect ourselves and our interests.

Moreover, this Hadith also reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his deep understanding and insight. His words serve as a reminder that knowledge is a powerful tool in recognizing and countering the schemes of our enemies.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of being vigilant and proactive in safeguarding ourselves against the crafty schemes of our enemies. It urges us to remain awake and aware, both in the physical and spiritual realms, so that we may overcome the challenges and obstacles that come our way. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to recognize and counter the plots of our adversaries.
