لا يُقَرِّبُ مِنَ اللّهِ سُبْحانَهُ إلاّ كَثْرَةُ السُّجُودِ والرُّكُوعِ۔
Nothing brings one closer to Allah, the Glorified, except copious prostration (sujūd) and bowing (rukū’).
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Attaining Nearness To Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of prostration (sujūd) and bowing (rukū’) in bringing one closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "sujūd" refers to the act of prostration, where one places their forehead on the ground in complete submission to Allah. It is a physical expression of humility and servitude before the Almighty. The word "rukū’" refers to the act of bowing, where one bends their back and lowers their head in reverence to Allah. Both sujūd and rukū’ are integral parts of the Muslim prayer (salah) and are acts of worship that demonstrate our complete surrender to Allah.
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of sujūd and rukū’ in the Quran. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (22:18)
And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons
This verse highlights the universal nature of sujūd, as everything in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, submits to Allah.
In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah also says, (22:77)
And whoever humbles himself before Allah and performs sujūd, he has indeed grasped the most trustworthy handhold
This verse emphasizes that sujūd is a means of attaining spiritual strength and stability. It is through sujūd that we firmly hold onto the rope of Allah's guidance and protection.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (3:39)
O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good - that you may succeed
This verse highlights the connection between sujūd, rukū’, and success in this life and the hereafter. By engaging in these acts of worship, we align ourselves with the path of righteousness and increase our chances of attaining success in both worlds.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that sujūd and rukū’ are not merely physical actions but rather profound acts of devotion that bring us closer to Allah. They are a means of purifying our hearts, humbling our souls, and seeking nearness to our Creator. When we prostrate and bow before Allah, we acknowledge our complete dependence on Him and express our gratitude for His blessings.
Moreover, sujūd and rukū’ have transformative effects on our character and behavior. They instill in us a sense of humility, patience, and gratitude. Through these acts of worship, we learn to detach ourselves from worldly distractions and focus solely on our relationship with Allah. This heightened spiritual connection enables us to navigate the challenges of life with resilience and steadfastness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the profound significance of sujūd and rukū’ in our journey towards Allah. These acts of worship not only bring us closer to our Creator but also shape our character and transform our lives. Let us strive to increase the frequency and sincerity of our sujūd and rukū’, seeking the pleasure and nearness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our existence. May Allah grant us the ability to prostrate and bow with utmost devotion and may He accept our worship.
