Hadith #5339

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The most destructive thing is doubt and uncertainty, and the most constructive thing is piety and keeping aloof from sin.

This profound statement highlights the significance of two contrasting qualities: doubt and uncertainty on one hand, and piety and abstaining from sin on the other.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (shakk) "شَكُّ" refers to doubt, hesitation, or uncertainty. It is a state of mind that lacks conviction and clarity. The word (irtiyab) "اِرْتِيَابُ" signifies a deeper level of doubt, where one is plagued by constant skepticism and indecisiveness.

On the other hand, the word (wara') "وَرَعُ" denotes piety, righteousness, and fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a state of consciousness that drives a person to be cautious and vigilant in their actions, always striving to please Allah and avoid His displeasure. The word (ijtinab) "اِجْتِنَابُ" means to keep aloof from something, to refrain from engaging in sinful or harmful behavior.

To understand the significance of these qualities, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and baseless doubts, as they can lead to sin and harm.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before passing judgment or acting upon it. It cautions against blindly accepting doubts and uncertainties without proper investigation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also emphasizes the destructive nature of doubt and uncertainty. When one is constantly plagued by doubts, it weakens their faith and hinders their ability to make sound decisions. Doubts can lead to confusion, division, and even disbelief. On the other hand, the consequences of piety and keeping aloof from sin are profound. When one strives to be pious and abstain from sinful behavior, they purify their soul and strengthen their relationship with Allah. This leads to inner peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose in life. Piety also inspires others and serves as a source of guidance and inspiration for the Muslim community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of doubt and uncertainty, and the constructive nature of piety and keeping aloof from sin.
