قِلَّةُ الاِسْتِرسالِ إلَى النَّاسِ أحْزَمُ۔
Confiding less in people [and not telling them your secrets] is more judicious.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Confiding In Others)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Confiding less in people [and not telling them your secrets] is more judicious.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of being cautious in sharing our secrets and personal matters with others. The word (istirsal) "اِسْتِرسالِ" in this Hadith refers to confiding or revealing secrets to others, while (ahzam) "أحْزَمُ" means more judicious or wiser.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourages believers to be cautious in sharing their personal matters. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:9),
O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety.
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining confidentiality and discussing matters that are beneficial and righteous.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and gossiping about others, as it can lead to harm and discord within the community.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith further highlights the potential consequences of confiding in others without caution. When we share our secrets with others, we expose ourselves to the risk of betrayal, gossip, and potential harm. It is essential to remember that not everyone has our best interests at heart, and divulging our secrets indiscriminately can lead to regret and negative consequences.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, provides this advice to guide Muslims in making wise decisions regarding sharing personal matters. By being selective in confiding our secrets, we protect ourselves from potential harm and maintain our dignity and privacy. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to exercise caution and discernment in choosing whom to trust with their personal matters.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw lessons for our personal lives. It is crucial to evaluate the trustworthiness and intentions of individuals before confiding in them. We should seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the teachings of the Quran to make informed decisions about sharing our secrets. Additionally, we should strive to be trustworthy individuals ourselves, respecting the privacy and confidences of others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being cautious in confiding our secrets to others. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourage believers to maintain confidentiality and avoid negative assumptions and gossip. By exercising discernment and seeking guidance from Allah, we can protect ourselves from potential harm and maintain our dignity and privacy. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to make judicious decisions in our interactions with others.
