مَنْ جَعَلَ الْحَمْدَ خِتامَ النِّعْمَةِ جَعَلَهُ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ مِفْتاحَ المَزِيدِ۔
Whoever puts praise [for Allah] as the conclusion of a blessing, Allah, the Glorified, makes it the key for more [blessings].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Praise)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of expressing gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Whoever puts praise [for Allah] as the conclusion of a blessing, Allah, the Glorified, makes it the key for more [blessings].
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and how expressing gratitude becomes a means for receiving further blessings from Him.
Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (hamd) "حَمْدَ" refers to praise, gratitude, and acknowledgment of the goodness and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses recognizing and acknowledging the favors and bounties that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. The word (khitam) "خِتَامَ" means conclusion or end, indicating that praise should be the final part of our acknowledgment of a blessing. It implies that we should conclude our gratitude by praising Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that when we make praise the conclusion of a blessing, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) makes it the key for more blessings. This means that when we express gratitude and praise to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for the blessings we have received, He increases His blessings upon us. It is a beautiful cycle of gratitude leading to more blessings, and more blessings leading to more gratitude.
This concept of gratitude and its connection to receiving more blessings can be found in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we express gratitude for the blessings we have, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to increase us in favor.
Another verse that supports this concept is found in Surah Ibrahim (14:34), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.
This verse highlights the abundant blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon us, and it reminds us of the importance of recognizing and appreciating these blessings.
When we apply the teachings of this Hadith in our lives, we realize that gratitude is not only a moral obligation but also a means to attract more blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By expressing gratitude for the blessings we have, we open the doors for further blessings to come our way. This gratitude should not be limited to mere words but should also be reflected in our actions and behavior. It should manifest in our obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our efforts to please Him.
Furthermore, this Hadith teaches us the importance of recognizing and acknowledging the blessings we often take for granted. It reminds us to reflect on the countless blessings we enjoy in our daily lives, such as health, family, sustenance, and guidance. By consciously acknowledging and expressing gratitude for these blessings, we develop a deeper sense of appreciation and contentment.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of expressing gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings. By making praise the conclusion of a blessing, we open the doors for more blessings to come our way. This concept of gratitude leading to increased blessings is supported by various Quranic verses. As Muslims, it is essential for us to cultivate a grateful heart and express our gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His countless blessings upon us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be truly grateful and may He shower us with His abundant blessings.
