(Ghurar al-Hikam: Supplication And The Supplicant)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ أُعطِيَ الدُّعاءَ لَمْ يُحْرَمِ الإجابَةَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who is given the [opportunity of] supplication will not be deprived of the response.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance and effectiveness of supplication in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words. The word (du'a) "دُعَاءَ" refers to supplication or prayer, which is an act of calling upon Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for help, guidance, or forgiveness. It is an expression of our complete reliance on Allah's mercy and power. The word (u'tiya) "أُعْطِيَ" means to be given or granted, indicating that the opportunity to supplicate is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The impactful message of this Hadith can be further understood through the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of supplication and assures us that He is always ready to respond to our prayers. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186, Allah says,

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

This verse assures us that Allah is always close to us and ready to answer our prayers.

Furthermore, in Surah Ghafir, verse 60, Allah says,

And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'

This verse clearly emphasizes the importance of supplication and the promise of Allah to answer our prayers. It is a reassurance that if we sincerely turn to Allah and supplicate to Him, He will surely respond to our needs.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the certainty of Allah's response to our supplications. It assures us that if we are given the opportunity to supplicate, we will not be deprived of the response from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This means that even if the answer to our prayers may not be immediate or in the form we expect, Allah will respond in the best way and at the most appropriate time.

For example, if a Muslim is facing a difficult situation and sincerely supplicates to Allah for guidance and help, Allah may respond by granting them the strength and patience to overcome the challenge. Or, Allah may provide them with a solution that they had not anticipated. The response may come in the form of a change in circumstances, a new opportunity, or an inner peace that enables the supplicant to navigate through the difficulties.

It is important to note that the response to our supplications is not solely based on our desires, but rather on what is best for us in the sight of Allah. Sometimes, what we perceive as a delay or denial in the response to our prayers is actually a blessing in disguise. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, knows what is best for us and responds to our supplications accordingly.

This Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to engage in supplication regularly and sincerely. It reminds us that we should never underestimate the power of du'a and the impact it can have on our lives. Through supplication, we establish a direct connection with our Creator, seeking His guidance, mercy, and forgiveness. It is a means of strengthening our relationship with Allah and acknowledging our complete dependence on Him.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the certainty of Allah's response to our supplications. It assures us that if we are given the opportunity to supplicate, we will not be deprived of the response from Allah. This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the importance of supplication and Allah's promise to answer our prayers. As Muslims, we should take this message to heart and engage in sincere and regular supplication, knowing that Allah is always ready to respond to our needs in the best way possible. May Allah grant us the understanding and ability to supplicate to Him with sincerity and may He always respond to our prayers.
